Petite Menu @ Jalan Besar

Note (2 October 204: Chef Nixon has left for Portico!)

Read a couple of reviews online about this place and was immediately won over by the extremely affordable prices, good-looking food and all the raves. Didn’t read a bad review at all!

Friends and I decided to head down there one fine, hot, sunny (please rain soon!) weekday afternoon. We got a little lost, there are 2 Aqueen hotels which are about 2 minutes apart.. this is the Jalan Besar one. It’s super near to Chye Seng Huat and Windowsill (of course we stopped by the latter after we were done with lunch).

Place was very quiet, but it’s okay I don’t mind having the whole place to myself. Everyone should come here and try the food though – it’s worth the walk/ ride in the hot sun and worth the trip out of town. VERY GOOD, VERY AFFORDABLE,  NOTHING MUCH TO FAULT.

I had the Chicken Confit ($15) which was EXTREMELY WELL DONE in my opinion. Skin was perfectly crispy and it just melted away in my mouth without being too oily. Chicken leg was juicy and tender, meat easily fell off the bone. It’s even better when you have it with the braised purple cabbage! Burst of both savoury and sweet juices in your mouth lol. Sweet potato puree was also a great change from normal mash. Loved it 🙂

Friend had the torched ribeye steak ($20). All boys love their beef it’s hilarious. It was tender and flavourful and my friend enjoyed it!

This is the pan-seared seabass which looked and tasted like a garden. That is meant to be a compliment. A wholesome, healthy, blooming! garden.

DESSERT: BLACKFOREST ($8). One of the best $8 I’ve spent on desserts in a restaurant. “Chocolate mousse, brandied cherries, hazelnut soil and caramel ice-cream”. Blackforest cake doesn’t really move me, but this one made my insides jump. Every component was packed with a huge punch, but eating it all in one bite gives you varied textures and layers of taste and… just eat it yourself. The mousse was smooth, rich, chocolately and I was glad there was so much of that soil. It all comes together so well! We were very happy after eating this.

Petite Menu also has a very worth it tasting menu in my opinion – $36 for 4 courses. Prices here are seriously HONESTLY very affordable and is definitely worth a try if you’re looking for something fun.
