Chilli Crab!!! All (or if not, most) Singaporeans probably love this dish (hope I’m not over generalising). We pride ourselves on getting down and dirty on this. It’s okay to use all ten fingers, hands only, no chopsticks or cutlery please. Or wear a bib to prevent stains, but really, you should have known better before you donned that white dress/ shirt!
Jumbo is my family’s go-to when we are thinking of crab. There are quite a few outlets, including one at East Coast Park, but that’s way too far for us. We also love the atmosphere at the Dempsey outlet. We always sit in the al fresco area, which is always sufficiently breezy and cooling. It’s surrounded by trees and greenery, and there’s always a boisterous crowd having crabs and seafood. It’s kinda lush, yet casual, and it’s tons of fun having seafood in such an environment.
The chilli crab here is smothered in a smooth and thick chilli sauce, with hints of tomato. It’s sweet and it’s savoury, and something you can eat by the spoonful. As everyone will say, get the deep fried man tous to dip into the sauce. The crab itself is a plump and juicy Sri Lankan crab, with lots of crab roe if you go enough to get a female one.
Another firm favourite of ours is the Mee Goreng. It’s a generous portion; the Medium is enough for 4 adults to share. I personally feel it’s well fried, each strand of yellow noodles coated with the sweet & spicy sauce, and a whole lot of fresh seafood and greens that’s enough to go around.
These are 2 of our must-haves when we’re there! Tell me what else you have. Some people think this place is too touristy, and not authentic, but for us, it’s somewhere convenient and rather satisfying for crabzzzz.
